Princess Cruises announce further addition to Royal Class
In 2010, Carnival Corporation reached an agreement with Fincantieri to build two new ships for Princess Cruises. These new builds would form the beginning of an exciting era for Princess Cruises, with the introduction of the brand new ‘Royal Class’. Offering passengers a heightened level of luxury and elegance on the seas, this distinctive class came to formation in 2013 with the launch of Royal Princess. And, of course, it was only fitting that the new class of ship be greeted with the blessing of British royalty, with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, becoming godmother to Royal Princess at an official naming ceremony in Southampton in June 2013.
In 2014, Royal Princess was joined by Regal Princess and will be joined by a third vessel, Majestic Princess, in April this year. In line with Princess Cruises’ history of being showcased via television series – referring to popular US sitcom ‘The Love Boat - both of these vessels have formed the setting for subsequent series of ITV’s ‘The Cruise’.
It was quickly announced that these elegant ‘Royal Class’ ships would be joined by another additional two builds, set to launch in 2019 and 2020 respectively. And, last week, it was also announced that the ‘Royal Class’ would be joined by a sixth vessel, scheduled to launch in 2022. This brand new vessel will also be built by Fincantieri and will accommodate a total of 3,560 passengers. Similarly to other vessels in the class, the ship will offer a central atrium, numerous dining options, and a plethora of entertainment venues. Additionally, 81% of all staterooms on board the new build will feature balconies.
UK and Europe Vice President for Princess Cruises, Tony Roberts, said: “The decision to grow our fleet is testament to the success of Princess Cruises around the world. With four new ships now due for delivery, starting with Majestic Princess in March, these are incredibly exciting times for Princess Cruises.”
One of the most interesting new features for cruisers to enjoy on board the new build will be the Ocean Medallion – a small wearable device which passengers will carry around with them on the ship to enhance their onboard experience. The device will help passengers navigate the ship, assist with the boarding process and even order a passenger’s specific favourite drink. The device can be paired with stateroom TVs and passengers’ mobile devices to provide an interactive experience on board – offering guidance with venues, spa reservations, celebrations, photographs, port excursions and much more.
