2015 has certainly been a year of spectacular new ships and developments within the cruise industry. In March, the Queen officially named P&O Cruises’ newest and largest vessel, 'Britannia'; whilst Royal Caribbean’s second Quantum Class ship, 'Anthem of the Seas', was named in Southampton in April.
Richard Branson has announced his global brand, Virgin, will enter the cruise industry – with the first of three revolutionary ships set to launch in 2020. Crystal Cruises announced a huge revamp of their brand, with the huge expansion plans including the launch of yacht cruises, a river cruise line, a luxury air brand, and three new “Exclusive Class” ships between now and late 2018.
But there is one major cruise ship launch yet to take place this year and, upon entering service, it will become the fifth largest cruise ship in the world. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Escape will have a gross tonnage of 164,600; measure 1,098 feet in length, and offer accommodation for 4,248 guests at any one time. Cruise Franchise takes a closer look at what we currently know about this exciting new ship.
One aspect that Norwegian Cruise Line excels in is fun, and Norwegian Escape will not disappoint. A unique feature within the cruise industry is the three-story ropes course, where you’ll be able to manoeuvre around an obstacle course several feet above the top deck of the ship. The course even extends over the sides of the ship, so you can simulate walking the plank.
Four brightly coloured chutes emerge from the top of the ship to form one of Norwegian Escape’s most distinctive features. Not only will the new ship feature the biggest water park at sea, it will also offer the fastest slide at sea, with guests being able to simulate a free fall drop. There’s also a kids aqua park, featuring slides, water cannons and interactive features for younger guests.
On board Norwegian Escape, the spa is so much more than just a salon and a range of treatment rooms. Chill out in the snow room, where ice cold temperatures and Arctic features will stimulate blood circulation. Have you ever heard of halotherapy? The salt room enables you to give it a try, with surroundings that simulate natural salt caves in Eastern Europe. Salt in the form of vapour is scientifically proven to improve respiratory and skin ailments.
Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for relaxed dining options, with no need to eat at specific times or adhere to a formal dress code. Food Republic is an exciting new venue set to début on Norwegian Escape, where you can experience highly flavoursome fusion dishes that mix flavours from destinations around the world. There are many dining options on board Norwegian Escape, with a mixture of complimentary and speciality options. The Michael Mondavi inspired Cellars wine bar, where guests can be able to have a thoroughly enjoyable experience whilst learning about the production of wine.
Those seeking after dinner entertainment on board the ship will not be disappointed with the variety of venues available on board Norwegian Escape. Enjoy the sounds of the 80’s at the ‘For the Record’ venue, where the soundtracks to the films are brought to life. Visit ‘Headliners Comedy Club’, where you’ll be able to witness a range of hilarious performances by top comedians. Sing and dance the night away at ‘Howl at the Moon', where talented musicians perform a rock ‘n’ roll duelling piano show featuring songs from the last 40 years.
Norwegian Escape will be the first of four scheduled ‘Breakaway Plus Class’ ships, with the second ship – Norwegian Bliss – set to launch in 2017.
Cruise is currently a booming industry, with many lines looking to offer the largest ships with the most exciting features and amenities; whilst others are competing to provide the most luxurious and intimate surroundings.
